Kids Abacus Course Syllabus

Course Overview

This course will introduce children to the fundamentals of using an abacus, enhancing their arithmetic skills, concentration, and confidence in math.

Age Group

Recommended for children aged 6-10 years.

Duration

8 weeks, with one 1-hour session per week.

Week 1: Introduction to the Abacus

• Objectives:
  • Familiarize students with the structure of the abacus.
  • Understand the purpose and history of the abacus.
• Activities:
  • Identify parts of the abacus.
  • Simple counting exercises.

Week 2: Basic Number Concepts

• Objectives:
  • Learn to represent numbers on the abacus.
  • Understand place value (units, tens, hundreds).
• Activities:
  • Practice counting from 1-100 using the abacus.

Week 3: Addition with the Abacus

• Objectives:
  • Master simple addition using the abacus.
• Activities:
  • Guided practice on adding single-digit numbers.
  • Interactive games to reinforce skills.

Week 4: Subtraction with the Abacus

• Objectives:
  • Learn basic subtraction techniques.
• Activities:
  • Practice subtracting single-digit numbers.
  • Fun quizzes to apply subtraction skills.

Week 5: Introduction to Multiplication

• Objectives:
  • Understand the concept of multiplication using the abacus.
• Activities:
  • Practice multiplication tables using the abacus.
  • Group activities for collaborative learning.

Week 6: Introduction to Division

• Objectives:
  • Learn basic division concepts.
• Activities:
  • Practice simple division problems.
  • Use group work to solve real-life division scenarios.

Week 7: Mixed Operations

• Objectives:
  • Combine addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
• Activities:
  • Problem-solving challenges with mixed operations.
  • Fun competitions to encourage teamwork.

Week 8: Review and Assessment

• Objectives:
  • Review all concepts learned throughout the course.
  • Assess understanding and skills using the abacus.
• Activities:
  • Group games and challenges.
  • Individual assessments to gauge progress.

Materials

• All materials, including abacuses and worksheets, will be provided by the Computech Center.

Evaluation

• Ongoing informal assessments through class participation and activities.
• Final assessment at the end of the course to measure improvement.

Eligibility Criteria for Kids Abacus Course

1. Age Requirement:

   • Children aged 6-10 years are eligible to enroll.

2. Interest in Math:

   • A basic interest in numbers and math concepts is encouraged.

3. Learning Readiness:

   • Children should be able to focus for one-hour sessions and engage in group activities.

4. No Prior Experience Required:

   • No previous experience with an abacus or advanced math skills are necessary.

5. Parental Consent:

   • Parents or guardians must provide consent for enrollment and participation in the course.
